South
America
Upon entering the zoo, your zoo
tour begins with South American exhibits,
featuring Rheas, a large, flightless
bird related to the ostrich of Africa.
The recently completed Chilean Flamingo walk-in
aviary affords guests an intimate look
at these delicate water birds.
Across the walkway from the flamingos
are Maned Wolves, known for
their skunk-like musk scent. As you
turn the corner from the maned wolf
exhibit, listen for the high-pitched
chatter of Cotton-top Tamarins.
It's easy to recognize how these tiny
primates got their name – they have
a plume of white hair on their heads.
Cross
the boardwalk over Hamlin Lake, a
lagoon home to various waterfowl, and
you soon see Patagonian Cavies – one
of the largest South American rodents.
Two species of Macaws, a pair
of Toucans and Squirrel Monkeys inhabit
enclosures across from a spacious area
for a family troupe of Black-handed
Spider Monkeys. |
