COLOBUS MONKEY
Scientific Name: Colobus guereza kikyuensis
Range & Habitat: Found in the tropical forests, highlands and mountains of Central and East Africa
Size: 19-27 inches in length; tail is 25-35 inches. Weigh approximately 27 lbs.
Life Span: About 20 years in captivity
Gestation: 148-178 days; 1 young. Breed year round.
Wild Diet: Green leaves, bark, grass seeds, fruits, blossoms, insects and soil
Zoo Diet: Apples, carrots, sweet potato, red or white potatoes, leaf-eater biscuits and leafy greens
Habits: Colobus monkeys live mainly in the forest canopy; they are rarely seen on the ground and are known as the most arboreal of all the African monkeys. Troops are 3-15 monkeys with one older male, several females and their young. Temporary bachelor groups are also formed.
Newborns are completely white with kinky fur. Full adult coloration is acquired at 4-7 months. Their hind legs are notably longer than their arms. They use branches as trampolines, jumping up and down on them to get enough momentum for a leap of more than 10 meters.
Their stomach has two compartments to help digest all the plant matter that makes up much of their diet.
