Giraffe Calf Born Monday Evening at Dickerson Park Zoo
Springfield, Mo. – A giraffe was born at approximately 6 p.m., Monday, Aug. 18, at Dickerson Park Zoo. The calf is yet unnamed, but the zoo’s veterinarian confirmed it is male.
The mother, Emma, is 9 years old, and this is her second calf. Emma was born at Dickerson Park Zoo in June 2005. Her mother, Gidget, is the oldest giraffe in the zoo’s herd. This is the sixth calf sired by Peperuka, the zoo’s breeding male. Peperuka came to Dickerson Park Zoo in 2011.
Guests can view Emma and her calf in the exhibit yard along with giraffes Gidget, Cheka, and four juveniles (Pammy J, Caley, Mili and Anna Belle). For now, Peperuka is in a separate yard but still visible to the public.
Dickerson Park Zoo is open daily 9 a.m.-5 p.m. through the end of September. The elevated viewing/feeding deck at the giraffe yard is open daily from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
